The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) administers the national airspace, including the use of unmanned aerial systems or drones, based on mandates by Congress in the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 (PDF).

Drone Registration

All drones must be registered, except those that weigh 0.55 pounds or less and are flown under the Limited Recreational Operations. Drones registered under the Exception for Limited Recreational Operations cannot be flown under Part 107.

Drone Safety Tips

  • Fly your drone at or below 400 feet
  • Keep your drone within your line of sight
  • Be aware of FAA Airspace Restrictions
  • Respect privacy
  • Never fly near other aircraft, especially near airports. Drone flight is typically not allowed within 5 miles of Falcon Field Airport and requires FAA authorization.
  • Never fly over groups of people, public events or stadiums full of people
  • Never fly near emergencies such as fires or rescue/recovery efforts
  • Never fly under the influence of drugs or alcohol

Want to fly your Drone over Falcon Field Airport?

Flying your drone near or over airport property is normally not permitted. The Federal Aviation Administration requires drone operators to file a waiver to operate in a drone over any airport in the United States. All applications for a waiver to operate over an airport must be completed through FAADroneZone. How to Report a Drone Sighting

If you witness a drone operation that appears dangerous or is being used to commit a crime, please report it immediately to local law enforcement.

If you witness a drone not following FAA rules, contact the local FAA Flight Standards District Office (FSDO). FAA Investigators may be able to investigate your report and follow up with the drone operator. Unauthorized drone operators may be subject to penalties and criminal charges.
